VOLUNTEERS RESTORE DECKS!
A total of 15
volunteers spent at least part of the week of May 21st through 28th working to
restore the weather decks on USS Stewart. Many of the deck seams had rusted
through and were threatening to allow water to enter the spaces below.

Using the age-old method of chipping hammer and wire brush, volunteers prepped the metal to accept marine epoxies and primer.

John Rodgaard and Wife Judy Pearson.
Bob and Mary Payne worked on the gun deck, while Jim Welch, Barry White and Walt Alexander worked the main deck aft.

Soon, thanks to guys like Bart Verellen, Karl Hoffman and his daughter Adrienne, the decks were patched and primed, waiting for the finish coat! Many thanks also go to Carl Byler who helped mix many batches of epoxy and to Karl Bollman helped move material from point A to B and back!
And of course our thanks and kudos go to Leon "Rip" Roedell who was the Work Week cook! Rip proved he is indeed "master of the tri-tip steak"!
Our thanks go out to John and Billie McMichael who showed us where things were and provided invaluable advice when needed!
It is estimated that the volunteers restored some 60% of the weather deck surface, and solved 90% of the deck penetration problems!

There's nothing like a freshly painted weather deck!
